Overview

The artist's 2016 solo exhibition at TOPOHAUS Art Center, held from March 23 to 29, 2016. The exhibition's keyword 地角天涯 (the end of the earth, the end of the sky) is glossed in the artist's note: "For the past decade, visiting and sketching Mt. Geumgang has been a great joy. But now it is a place we cannot reach — close yet unreachable, so distant that it sits at the end of the earth and the end of the sky." Since the suspension of Mt. Geumgang tourism in 2008, the artist paints the mountain while waiting for the day when one can again walk it freely, this time across the Baekdudaegan range.

The exhibition gathered reference reproductions from the artist's early 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 series (1993–1996), works from the 〈To the Other Shore〉 period (2014) such as 〈Manmulsang in the Rain〉, 〈Mt. Geumgang Pines〉, and 〈Light over Sujeongbong〉, and new 2016 works including 〈地角天涯 金剛山〉 (291×112cm) and 〈Mt. Geumgang Pines〉 (98×64cm).

The critical essay was Shin Dong-in's 〈Beyond Longing, Hand In Hand〉 (ar-2015-001), tracing how the artist's pursuit of "Korean value" — beginning with the 1988 Seoul Olympics — evolved into his twenty-two-year 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 practice, and analyzing the artist's work after the suspension of tourism in 2008.
