Overview

The first full-scale solo exhibition of the 〈Mt. Geumgang — Life Force〉 series. In October 1998 at Hanwon Museum, the artist presented nine paintings. Beginning with traditional motifs such as lanterns and the lotus pattern, the artist's practice had shifted from decorative idiom toward vitality of subject with 〈Arirang — Life Force〉 in 1992; from 1995 onward, became the medium through which he reinterpreted East Asian landscape painting for the present.

Art theorist Kim Yu-sook analyzed Shin's signature formal language — the dripping technique, chromatics reduced to yin and yang, and grid lines combined with silkscreened objects — framing the result as a "view of landscape for contemporary life."
