Overview

The first full-scale solo exhibition of the 〈Mt. Geumgang — Life Force〉 series. In October 1998 at Hanwon Museum, the artist presented nine paintings. Beginning with traditional motifs such as cheongsa-choreong lanterns and the lotus pattern, the artist's practice had shifted from decorative idiom toward vitality of subject with 〈Arirang — Life Force〉 in 1992; from 1995 onward, Mt. Geumgang became the medium through which he reinterpreted East Asian landscape painting for the present.

Art theorist Kim Yu-sook analyzed Shin's signature formal language — the dripping technique, chromatics reduced to yin and yang, and grid lines combined with silkscreened objects — framing the result as a "view of landscape for contemporary life."
