Overview

A solo exhibition surveying ten years of the artist's Mt. Geumgang practice, which began in 1993. Held in November 2003 at Savina Museum of Contemporary Art, the show gathered works from the 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 series accumulated through repeated visits — across seasons and routes — since the artist joined the first inaugural tour following the 1998 opening of Mt. Geumgang tourism.

Critic Lee Ji-ho, in the essay 〈Mt. Geumgang Seen Between Sasil and Saui〉, situated Shin's practice within the lineage of true-view landscape, placing it "between the precise observation of sasil (realism) and the spiritual condensation of saui (idea-realism)." Kim Jun-gi, in 〈Ten Years of Longing, Mt. Geumgang〉, framed the artist's working stance itself as "an accumulation of longing for a mountain that cannot be reached." The Savina Museum produced and released a separate video on the artist's process and view of his practice.

This exhibition marked the first time the artist's Mt. Geumgang work gathered both public attention and sustained critical engagement, becoming the starting point for the consecutive solo exhibitions that followed — 〈Light of Mt. Geumgang〉 (2005, Moran Gallery) and 〈Light of Inner Mt. Geumgang〉 (2007, Bit Gallery).
