Overview

Following the 1998 〈Mt. Geumgang — Life Force〉 solo exhibition at Hanwon Museum, the artist's second solo exhibition under the same title was held at Pyo Gallery, where twelve paintings were presented in September 1999. As the artist's first exhibition following two field visits to Mt. Geumgang (1998, 1999), the show marked the decisive shift from a conceptual idiom based on photographs toward representation rooted in direct observation.

Art critic Kang Tae-seong, in 〈Spaces of Affirmation, Negation, and Recollection〉, observed that the artist's expression had become “not merely stylized decoration but an ‘appropriate ornament (decoratif)’ that emphasizes the actuality of nature,” and read the “scattered lines” the artist has developed since 1989 as unfolding across three spaces — affirmation, negation, and recollection. The essay was written for the Pyo Gallery exhibition and also published in the October 1999 EXHIBITION section of Monthly Art Magazine.
