Overview

The artist's first 〈Arirang〉 solo exhibition. Held for one week in May 1989 at Toh Gallery, the show presented new paintings such as 〈Arirang — Morning〉 and 〈Arirang — Unification〉, marking the artist's first full-scale engagement with reconfiguring traditional pictorial idioms into contemporary painting.

Critic Park Shin-ui (writing in Ilgan Sports) read 〈Arirang — Morning〉 as visualizing "the law of life force — concentrating and dispersing" through "the four squares in the corners representing the cardinal directions and the sun at the center." In 〈Arirang — Unification〉, he noted, the artist replaces the taegeuk motif with two phoenixes intertwining their necks, resolving the dialectic of national division into humorous reconciliation. Park framed Shin's project as an attempt to "regenerate tradition into a form to be newly recovered at today's vantage point."
