Overview
Shin Jang-sik's second 〈Arirang〉 solo exhibition. Following his 1988 paintings show at Toh Gallery and prints show at The 3rd Gallery, this exhibition brought together a deeper exploration of the same Arirang theme. In the 〈Arirang — Prayer I〉 series, the artist reinterprets traditional symbols — candlelight, cheongsa-choreong lanterns, the obangsaek five-direction colors, and the taegeuk — building compositions of countless small candles radiating light to visualize wishes for coexistence and unification.
Critic Choi Tae-man framed the Arirang series not as an expression of han (sorrowful resignation), but as "a representation of forward-looking consciousness — the people's will to overcome a present full of contradictions." He traced how the artist absorbs symbols from folk paintings, shamanistic works, and traditional patterns into his own affirmative worldview, distilling the result into "self-affirmation and generosity."
The exhibition later traveled to ON Gallery in Osaka, Japan, marking the first international showing of the artist's Arirang series.
