Overview

〈Arirang〉 was Shin Jang-sik's solo exhibition at Shinsegae Gallery, held from March 19 to 31, 1991. The artist described 〈Arirang — A Joyful Day〉 as depicting the swaying of cheongsa-choreong (blue-and-red gauze lanterns), with its direct source in 〈Annyeong (Farewell)〉 — the final piece of the 1988 Seoul Olympics closing ceremony, in which all performers and audience members waved cheongsa-choreong in greeting. The lantern motif was redesigned for contemporary use from a lantern in the Dankook University Costume Museum. The artist framed 〈Arirang〉 not through the emotion of han (sorrow) but through the emotion of hope and resolve as one crosses the Arirang pass. A review by art critic Oh Byung-uk was written for this exhibition titled 〈Decorative Painting and the Pursuit of Tradition〉, also published in Wolgan Misool (Monthly Art) 1991.
