Summary
An artist essay 'Drawing Mt. Geumgang' contributed by Shin Jang-sik to the January 1995 issue of SPACE (Arts & Architecture & Environment) magazine. Following his earlier 'Arirang' series, the artist describes turning toward 'the vitality of nature' as a subject and arriving at Mt. Geumgang — drawing inspiration from the iconography of Jeong Seon, Korean folk paintings, and Kim Gyu-jin's Mt. Geumgang painting at Huijeongdang Hall (Changgyeonggung), while also addressing the nation's longing for a mountain made inaccessible by division. The essay is accompanied by an English translation by Park Hyun-Joo, and the magazine's cover features Shin's 〈Mt. Kumgang〉 (1994, paper and acrylic on canvas).

Mt. Kumgang has been painted from the Koryo Dynasty. Throughout the Choson Dynasty and even under Japanese colonial rule, Mt. Kumgang was one of the main subjects of paintings. Also in North Korea, many paintings of Mt. Kumgang are being produced. Then, why are Koreans so fascinated with Mt. Kumgang? Why are there so many paintings of Mt. Kumgang? And why do Koreans believe Mt. Kumgang is the world's best?
Mt. Kumgang, long cherished in the hearts of Koreans, is not only an altar where the national spirits gather together but also the subject of worship. It is not only Koreans but also Chinese who admired Mt. Kumgang. A Chinese poet once sang that it was his life-long wish to be born on the Korean Peninsula so as to visit Mt. Kumgang.
The exhibition is significant in a sense that it contributes to visualizing Koreans' longing for reunification by providing the public with an opportunity to understand the real meaning of Mt. Kumgang. The images of Mt. Kumgang — a holy area for the national spirit, heaven's music, love, dream, joy, happiness, blessing, quiet peace, harmony of nature, mystery of the universe, and unity with nature — seem to be well reflected in the paintings of the exhibition. In order for these images to be better understood, the exhibition also utilized artistic works and factual data of Mt. Kumgang of the past and the present.
