The work comes from a childhood memory — half waking from a midday nap on the wooden floor of my grandmother's house, glimpsing cockscombs beneath the eaves through still-drowsy eyes. The vision of cockscomb petals freely flying through the air is rendered as the energy of vital force unfolding in space, while the eaves themselves are arranged in an even row across the upper edge of the picture.

그가 탐구해 온 것은 리듬의 표현에 관한 것이다. 리듬의 표현은 그림에 생명력을 불어넣는 작업이고, 화면이 리듬감으로 충만될 때 관찰자가 화면 앞에서 느낄 수 있는 교감은 풍부해진다. "생명을 가지고 있는 것은 모두 리듬을 가지고 있고, 자신의 호흡과 재료의 리듬이 합치되는 지점을 찾는 것"이 그의 연구과제이다. "처음엔 작의가 강했었는데, 차츰 재료의 리듬을 인식하게 됐고, 그 리듬의 인식 위에서 작업하게 됨으로써 새로운 아이디어도 나오고 생동감 있는 작품이 만들어지게 됐다. … 생명이 불어넣어지지 않은 작품들은 얼마나 무미건조한 것인가?" 대략 이러한 요지로 그는 자신의 작품세계에 대한 설명을 시작했다. 바로 생명력, 리듬, 율동 등과 같은 개념들이 그의 작품의 기본이 된다는 의미이다. 그럼으로써 작위를 배제하고 그 자신과 재료의 리듬을 따라 작업할 때 자연이 지닌 생명력과 자신의 정서가 자연스럽게 드러난다는 것이다.
