Overview

The second solo exhibition of the 〈Twelve Scenes of Mt. Geumgang〉 series. Held in September 2018 at Kumsan Gallery (Hoehyeon-dong, Seoul), the show opened just after the artist's inclusion in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 〈Diamond Mountains〉 (February-May 2018) and the April installation of his work at the Peace House for the inter-Korean summit — a moment when the artist's Mt. Geumgang work gathered the widest public attention.

Critic Choi Tae-man, in his essay 〈Painting the Twelve Scenes of Mt. Geumgang of 'Here and Now'〉, traced how the series settles into "not an object of longing, but a present-tense landscape standing before us here and now." In a series of interviews, the artist reflected on how his thirty-year practice on Mt. Geumgang takes on new meaning alongside the changing political situation on the Korean peninsula.
