Overview

The artist's 〈Samādhi〉 solo exhibition. Held in November 2012 at Space Sun+ in Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, the show marked the consolidation of the tone of the artist's later 〈On the Path〉 body of work, presenting new paintings that bring the Buddhist culmination of awakening — samādhi — onto the canvas.

Samādhi (三昧) is a Sanskrit term denoting the state of mind concentrated on a single object — 心一境性 (cittaikāgratā, one-pointedness of mind). Variously rendered into Korean as 정 (定, settled) or 등지 (等持, equal holding), it is commonly translated as "concentration" or "absorption." The term refers to the gathering of a scattered mind into a quiet yet clearly conscious state in which wisdom becomes lucid — a core concept encapsulating the Buddha's practice and awakening.

Hyunbul Daily News covered the exhibition under the title 〈The Buddha's Peak of Awakening Brought into 'Samādhi-do' Paintings〉, noting how Shin's arc from 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 to 〈Samādhi〉 extends the spirituality of Korean landscape painting through a religious and meditative lens.
