Overview

A solo exhibition titled 〈Mt. Geumgang〉, held at INDECO Gallery from April 10 to 16, 1996. The show marks the point at which the artist begins to develop Mt. Geumgang in earnest as his sustained subject in the mid-1990s — its subtitle, 'gwannyeom sansu (Conceptual Landscape),' compresses the intent. Alongside the large-scale work that became prototypical of the 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 series — hanji and acrylic on canvas, 454.5×181.8cm, now in the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art collection — the show presented 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 in various formats and traces of the early-1990s 〈Vital Force〉 series: 〈Vital Force〉, 〈Arirang — Vital Force〉, 〈Mt. Geumgang — Vital Force〉. Written for this exhibition was a review titled 〈Mt. Geumgang? Or Shin Jang-sik's Mountain?〉 by art critic Sim Sang-yong; the full text was not available at the time of this entry — to be supplemented during artist review.

A review titled 〈Mt. Geumgang? Or Shin Jang-sik's Mountain?〉 was written for this exhibition by the art critic Sim Sang-yong; the full text of that essay was not available at the time of this entry — to be supplemented when the source can be located. The list of exhibited works comprises twelve works identified by automatic caption matching against the artist's blog post (80014598786), together with six additional works confirmed by visual review (three pieces that share captions with already-registered works but are distinct, plus three installation pieces in the 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 series). Working materials — the studio process for the large 〈Mt. Geumgang〉 and the installation views — are gathered in a separate related-materials entry.
