Overview

Shin Jang-sik's solo exhibition commemorating the reopening of Gallery Icon, held from May 12 to 24, 1992. Following his 1989 second solo exhibition at Toh Gallery and his 1991 Shinsegae Gallery show, this exhibition presented works in which the artist deepened his exploration of traditional Korean visual idioms within the 〈Arirang〉 series. The show featured sixteen works including the large-scale 〈Where Do Our Hearts Go〉 (182×226cm) and the monumental 〈Arirang — Vitality〉 (226×558cm, formerly held by Korea Columbia Pictures and lost in a fire), depicting Gwanghwamun and Mt. Bukak — fourteen new works from 1992 alongside two works from 1991. In his exhibition essay 〈The Virtues of Tradition and Historicity〉, critic Seo Sung-rok read the artist's use of hanji, the obangsaek (five-direction colors), and folk iconographies — cheongsa-choreong lanterns, cockscombs, lucky pouches, the taegeuk, and Buddhist flame patterns — as a deliberate integration of "Korean cosmological symbols" into a unified pictorial logic, and identified his Gwanghwamun-Government-General compositions as a meditation on "the lost national fortune" during the colonial era.
